As the others so far have answered yes, I'd like to say, "Probably"
Most especially if the writer drew on experiences that make up the content and context, it may be that having the close connection adds to the believability as portrayed by them?
That said,,, "Being there" is no promise that one can relate the experience to others, especially a community, or global audience, with as much "affect" as one who has studied and acted in the craft.
We are witness to that every day, or in plays/films in which someone is cast specifically because they are "MORE RIGHT" for a part, and can translate impact to an audience. That may only be due to the fact that they are already accepted as an actor, in large measure, or they are Widely known for their portrayals, and audiences already relate, not only to them, but to characters they exhibit. That isn't meant to discredit the writer in any way, but the idea is to engage, for multiple reasons, the largest audience possible.
If the piece happens to be one that will have IMPACT, certainly as the writer, I'd want some involvement, at least as a consultant, and most especially if the piece is based on real life experiences.

particular, you could cameo on your guy or woman action picture.. i dont think of you may wish a great sort of experience (relies upon on how massive the section is)... stephen king does this a lot in his movies.. he in lots of situations takes on a small functionality.. says a pair traces and walah!
