My mom's boyfriend is Christian, goes to church but doesn't believe in Christmas

Maybe because it's a Pagan holiday? Don't say it's stupid before asking him the details of why. I personally don't like how commercialized the holiday has become. It's not about spending money, it's about spending time with your loved ones. It's Jesus' birthday, not ours, so exchanging material is so very trife.

No, it is not stupid. I try to celebrate Christmas every single day of the year. I know that Jesus the Christ child was not born on December 25 but rather during the spring when the shepherds were in the fields with their flocks.

Since he is a Christian and goes to church it is far more likely that he is opposed to the commercialized Xmas.

I am a born again Christian and I go to church but I don't get all caught up in the X number of shopping days until Christmas.
But I'm having a lot of fun this year gathering items to fill 2 shoe boxes with gifts for disadvantaged children in Operation Christmas Box.

I'm hoping that your mom's boyfriend is not as some of the other answers speculate a JW. I'm saying that because even though JWs currently claim to be Christian they didn't use to make such a claim. In fact they riduculed Christians. The word means that the person has accepted Jesus Christ as their LORD and Savior who died on the cross (and rose from the dead) to make it possible for them to be in a right relationship with the heavenly Father.

I'm curious about your views and practices regarding Christmas.

Being a Christian, he believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, was crucified, died, buried and rose again.
He did this as payment for our sins, like a gift.
Christmas is the day we celebrate Jesus's birthday, even though it is not the actual day He was born.
Many Christians are against the commercialized, santa clause version of Christmas. They still recognize the gift giving in most cases because this is the way of duplicating or remembering the gifts the three wise men brought when Jesus was born.
Christmas should be about Christ not santa clause, and christmas trees. However.... If we remember the Reason for the season, it is fine to put up the tree and lights, buy out the stores if you can afford it, bake cookies, and let the children ride their new bikes and skates with their friends.
We are celebrating, and especially if you have children, a little of the commercialized Christmas is not going to hurt them. But when a Christian says he doesn't believe in Christmas, he is refering to santa clause and trees in your house and a room full of presents, rather than ...say three.

No, it's not overly stupid. Christmas is only a Christian holiday because of its name. If you look deep into a lot of Christian holidays, you will see pagan undertones. The use of a Christmas tree, kissing under the mistletoe, exchanging gifts, decorating in red and green, holly wreaths, eating cranberries, roasting chestnuts on an open fire, etc...these are all pagan traditions.

When the people of Europe, in particular the British Isles, were being converted to Christianity, the Christians found that sword-point conversions were only moderately effective. So they switched tactics and integrated a lot of pagan holidays into Christianity by giving them a Christian meaning. On the winter solstice, the pagans celebrated Yule. They believed that their sun god was being born on that day. So instead of the sun god being born, the Christian missionaries taught that it was Jesus Christ being born. (Historically speaking, Jesus had to have been born in the springtime. Records show that's when Caesar Augustus called for the census to be taken.)

Some Christians feel it is wrong to participate in any event that is even remotely un-Christian. Jehovah's Witnesses are a prime example, however other Christian sects are doing it as well. Your mom's boyfriend sounds like he may be from one of these.

I'm sure he believes in the idea but not the pratice. Christmas is more of an American tradition that anything. Before it was to celebrate winter, then Christians decided it'll be a good time to celebrate the birth of jesus too, along with the other holidays around it.Same with Easter which was supossed to be a holiday to celebrate spring which is why we have the easter bunny, but im sure he believes he died and rose again. If he doesnt want to do the tradtion thats her own business it doesnt mean he's not christian.

what/???!?!?! is it that he just doesn't believe in giving presents? santa clause? the commercialism of it all? you might want to remind him that the whole giving presents thing came from the wise men giving presents to Jesus, my husband was a scrooge when i met him, he didn't celebrate Christmas, give presents or anything, and i 'm a BIG Chrismas person, now during Christmas time i come home from work and i hear Christmas music playing and he's in the kitchen making Christmas cookies from scratch! i just showed him how important and fun Christmas really is, i mean why live a Christian life without the excitment of Christmas, good luck!

Christmas is not actually Christs birthday Dec 25th was a day the Romans and other early pagans celebrated for a different reason and the roman emperor who wanted to convert more people to Christianity decided to call it Christs birthday so pagans could slide in more easily . same with Easter notice how Easter is never the same day sometimes weeks apart it was a celebration of Ishtar a pagan goddess.

Maybe it's the gift giving that he doesn't believe in and not the real reason behind Christmas. If that's the not the answer, then, yes, it is a bit confusing. Merry Christmas a few weeks early!

Maybe it's the commercialisms that he doesn't believe in. That can be a big turn off and gets away from the true meaning of Christmas. Besides, if you want to be actual and factual, Christ wasn't actually born on December 25th. It's just when we celebrate it.

no...what a person thinks is never stupid...it is their perception..and it is for a reason...Maybe you can use this difference between you and your mom's bf as a bonding experience....in a good moment, try asking him "why"....then really listen and hear with your ears (and heart)....it is these differences that make life the wonderful thing it is!!! If we all believed the same things....we would all get a little boring!!!
