You must be feeling frightful, curious and very interested all at the same time. Could this be like have something very powerful and precious in your possession and not knowing exactly how to put it to some good use, for if you don't than that thing tends to assume its own course into life that belongs to you?
You are not insane, and you do not sound like one either. You have just sensitized yourself to immense power and possibilities of human mind. What I have gathered from you question is that your have great deal of goodness in your heart that your want to share, your are concerned about the well fair of fellow human beings and that you appreciate if things were given a chance to change for better. I have said this just in order to establish your trust upon you own abilities in the context of you question. There is nothing wrong that I should see with your username either.
The reality, the conscious mind and self or soul, all should be as one seamless singularity in our life. This is a dynamic and integrated union of all that is in the mind - none of all these three entities can exist alone. We can call all this our reality, the mind or the self. This singularity is not static; it is a constant transformation, like a river. In this rapidly flowing river things ideas, notions, thought and things are conceived into existence, and things happen when these interact with one another. The gradual transformation of thought into physical realities is a subtle and impossibly complicated process. In this process time and space themselves are but things in existence.
Your thoughts can affect the reality at the other side of the universe. For a thought time and space means yet another thing – thoughts can create both time and space into existence. Why this does not happen in front of our eye? The reason is that space is already occupied. Our reality is packed full of matter, space an time. Then there are purposes, intentions, aspirations, hopes and prayers of people and beings of numerous types all around us queuing up to be realised into existence. Out of these ethereal entities only those get through that are in balance and harmony with the supreme purpose of the universe, or is the strongest on around.
To be conscious of reality of mind only partially and without any apparent purpose at hand can create problems. For in your words the pendulum swings but the motion of the pendulum is not simple to and fro motion we observe at the bottom of the grandfather clock, it extremely complex and accurate. To be too conscious about for example of our physical reality can make us apprehensive and overly exposed to stresses and strains of life. We tend to take things too seriously ignoring ourselves; we are likely to do just too much to be comfortable in life. If we become too conscious about our inner self than we tend to become introspective. Too much deep brooding and soul searching cause us to become isolated and agonisingly self-critical. To be aware of mid and its powers without following any discipline can also cause us to question uselessly our own abilities and of course thing strongly. The boundaries between dream and reality can blur giving us sensations of mystical and magical happenings.
All three areas of our life should be approached and studies with carefully following proven methods of study. Religions for example can lead us into deeper meanings of our self in relation to the world immediately around us, and the wider world all around us. Academic graduations and human interaction can lead us to explore wonderful regions of our mind, and of our selves.
And as final words I would say that it is possible to sit in the cockpit of a jet but without knowing how to fly the machine however wonderful is not only useless but can also prove fatal. If you for example imagine number one once in you mind written in front of you as a bright illuminated figure then you will not be able to imagine it out of existence. It is done once and for all. Its radiance can change forms and patterns but the mental process has no reverse.
Thought can create self-fulfilling demands for them to be realised at our sub-conscious level. They can generate realities but not in trivial direct way. With each thought the entire world of the thinker is altered and even then the form of reality that is create often cannot be sensed easily. The thought of a chair in my mind for example is real in for of chemical changes stored in the cell of my mind but not one can see it. The mental picture only if I translate into visible form will be visible by other people.
You can autosuggest yourself into doing something, or being somebody. After all hopes, wishes and prayers are but thoughts being thought in certain purposeful way. The courage in life and love for the things of life can bring things together in divine of all that is there. As if all were in your eager and loving embrace and your thoughts were for a much wider and better calling.

While I was waiting for this Question to load and before I saw your username and your 'Additional Information' under your question I already knew what my answer was going to be:
yes, for people who have mental health problems
But okay, I've got something else.
I have a question for you: why did you envison helping an old lady across the road? (it's such a cliché)
[okay, I have another question too: how long did you stand at the road waiting for an old lady to cross it?]
"Worse case scenario" - I hate that phrase! Don't people believe in realism any more?! I can guarantee that it wasn't the 'worse' thing that could have happened to you (even though I don't know what happened)
I have a mantra. It makes me realise that even although I didn't get the job I applied for; or that the person I like doesn't like me; or that it's christmas in 6 weeks and I haven't bought any presents yet (wow, talk about an anti-climax...) THINGS COULD BE WORSE (like, really worse, worse than whatever happened to you)
So no matter how 'bad' you think your life is, just remember:
"At least you're not being eaten by a bear".
I have another mantra (okay, I have loads which sort of ruins the use of the word) that I once read in a book:
"If you trust in yourself
and follow your star
and believe in your dreams
you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and not being so lazy."
Maybe this is what you should do?
Go and DO things insted of hoping for them. I bet you try to "mould and shape your reality" every day and would you like to tell me how many times it actually worked? 'Cause so far, you've only got one point.
If you want to help old ladies across the road or rescue kittens from trees or what ever floats your boat then decide what you want to do (this should take acout 3 seconds) and GO DO IT!
And if the kitten you rescue isn't stuck in the same type of tree that you imagined or that it's fur isn't the same colour the ask yourself "DOES IT REALLY MATTER" (yes, another one of my mantras, but who's counting?)
Note to reader: don't limit this process to rescuing cats and old ladies try it out on less trivial things

I believe in Murphy's law whereby if you think something good is going to happen something bad is invariably waiting round the corner just to trip you up. Or perhaps you're trying to meet a deadline and everything that can go wrong does.
Perhaps if you feel stressed and you're rushing because of this you're more likely to make mistakes and miss things - thus more things are likely to go wrong. So in a sense I do believe our thoughts can mould and shape our realities and destinies.

Yes. This life we live is the non-reality consciousness.
I think you are psychic/clairvoyant. Do not be scared. Knowing that you have the gift, use it to sort your life out.
Speak to an established psychic, i.e. someone who does it professionally, or ask around. Word-of-mouth is always best. Then perhaps you can start somewhere positively.
It also helps if you can meditate a lot and intend good to come out of your visualisations. Soon you'll see a nice change in your life.
If you're in the US it's easier to contact Kathleen Milner on www.kathleenmilner.com or Sonia Choquette on www.soniachoquette.com (Sonia has written great books like Psychic Pathway, etc and she has a radio show i think).
Otherwise, I'm sure if you look for local natural therapists in your area, they will know someone who can help you.
Good luck.

Well I believe that your thoughts can shape your experience of day-to-day life.
On a mundane level if your thoughts are negative your life will probably be quite sad, whereas if your thoughts are always positive then whatever life throws at you, you will be able to make something good out of it.
I'm not sure about thinking of finding £1M pounds on the street and it happening , but I'll give it a try!

I'm not a pro, this is just an opinon, but I think coincidences tend to stick in the mind. The other day someone asked me about my toothache, clearly thinking of someone else. Two days later I broke a tooth. It wasn't magical, it was just a coincidence, but it reminded me of the earlier odd conversation.
Your story about the old lady is similar. Random thoughts cross our minds, and then something happens that reminds us of that thought, thus reinforcing the memory. The things that don't get reinforced just get forgotten.
This may be why thinking positive things is a good idea. The more positive things you think, the more likely it is that events will reinforce those positive thoughts.
I don't know if that helps. Best of luck

Yes, I am beginning to thing this might well be the case.
The power of positive thinking? Cosmic Ordering? Power of Prayer? Physic? God? Guardian Angels? Dunno what does it for you, but it works for me! And like you I can be a bit of a pendulum, so I think we need to practise being Optimists don't you? I have thought about certain people in various situations and wham! A bit scary at times, but no you are most certainly NOT insane, you may well be a sensitive, what ever that means. Have a positive and happy life, good luck in your explorations.

Nah, they change how you perceive reality. Reality IS, it is not something that you can change by changing your thoughts. You can only change it through action. If you are in a death camp but you stay positive and keep a positive view on reality that does not change the reality that you are in a death camp. Also, reality forms your thoughts more than your thoughts form your reality. The key, in my opinion, is to learn how to control your own mind instead of allowing your external world do it for you.

Yes and No. No,your thoughts can't influence things around you (we don't have that power yet ) but they can change you, in your relation to things, events around you.
Yes, your thoughts can change your reality from a certain point of view, but not to the degree you are asking.

This question is in the 'philosophy' section, so I assume you are looking for a philosophical answer.
If you have thoughts of success, you are more likely to be confident about achieving them, and would also be more motivated for them.
Every event occurs twice - first in the pychological state, and then in the physical state. You control your destiny, if you can control both these states.

i do believe what you are saying cause i do believe that if you keep putting worst case scenarios across in your mind then these will start to act out in real life . after reading a series of dream books i found out it has a lot to do with your subconscious mind , all dream books are really the same but before you start to read these books keep a dream dairy(write down all that you dream about) then compare them to the book you will be very surprised
