Be careful with a steam cleaner as they can shrink some carpets. It all depends if it's a stain or just generally dirty. Some stains need specific things - white wine helps get rid of red wine etc etc. Depends on colour and carpet material too.

I have always found that Vanish Stain Remover works, even on old stubborn ones. However, this week I had a new radiator fitted and the plumber left a trail of black drips across my cream carpet: he used Fairy liquid squirted onto a sponge and it worked like magic!

You might try putting Tide and water in a spray bottle and
spraying it. Let it set for a few minutes. Also, try a bounce
dryer sheet, rub it on the stain. Hope this works. (no, I don't
work for Procter and Gamble.)

It depends what sort of stain it is. If it happens to be blood or something like it, try using plain ole peroxide. Look what it does on a cut. It's worth a try.
