Hedonism being a devotion to pleasure as a way of life. That can mean purely physical (lots of drugs, alcohol and sex) or psychological (mental thrills, superficial highs) et cetera.

My question is, what is wrong with pursuing a life devoted to pleasure?

arbitrarily, nothing. however, one must be careful not to ignore other factors of life that could be deemed important. you said yourself, superficial highs. a lot of pleasurable things are purely superficial. it's a blissful unawareness of truth. and...considering that pain and suffering are a part of a human life, you could end up denying factors that make you human. (in an extreme devotion to hedonism) you could end up hurting others through your lack of concern for the truth of displeasure. the basic fact here is that suffering exists. everyone wants to be happy, everyone seeks pleasure, but to embrace unhappiness is sometimes wise.

What would the world be like if everyone was a hedonist? People all pursuing a life devoted to personal pleasures. No rules, no morals, no god. Men having sex with children, and animals, and women. No one caring for anyone except themselves. Yep.. that sounds like heaven.

Seems to me that for a hedonist to have a pleasurable life he needs to take advantage of a few saps. Yep, the hedonist needs to exert dominance over weaker willed people in order to extract whatever he needs,, money, sex, power.

There's also the issues of problems of god, morals, and people pressuring you to do what is good for society. God shouldn't exist. Morals can only have one commandment"do what benefits me". Society will break down as everybody sticks it to each other to achieve their personal pleasures.

We are spiritual beings experiencing a physical existence. If we live a totally hedonistic life, we do not experience the spiritual growth necessary to prepare us for the next world or next life depending on what you believe.

1. As long as you hurt none, and break no laws, there isn't a problem, per se. This is a Rule.

2. On the other hand, it would be nice if you were aware of the long-term consequences of your actions, on yourself. This is merely a Guideline.

3. Enjoy yourself dude!

Maybe the answer should be not to find pleasurable things to do, but rather to find pleasure in all things you do.....

there's nothing wrong with it. it's whether you hurt someone in the process...then it becomes a problem
