I have tried B & Q and Screwfix but cannot see what I need. Anybody out there with any thoughts.

You need to go to a plumbers merchant and ask for a set of BASIN FIXINGS, also on Screwfix but M10 only!!

have you tried wood floor toilet mounting studs in plumbing dept
not sure about m8 size you refer to for the machine thread ,,,the ones im talking about are 1/4 stud w/ 3/8 nut fine thread w/ a wood lag on the other end

A couple of alternatives:
If its going into wood, you cold also use brass metal inserts and just use an M8 bar.
Or if its masonary you might choose to use hilti/rawl bolts.
