There were less people walking around, cars were big and expensive, fuel was cheap, houses were cheap, it was the dawn of the domestic computer age. you could buy a commodore 64 for about $800 ($2400 today) it had 64k of memory, used a tape deck for storage and took 10 minutes to load a game. it could display 16 colours.
Colour television became popular and had replaced black and white tv. Electronic music synths were becoming sophistcated, music started to change dramatically.
The AIDS virus was in the news a lot, people were worried because they were not sure how the disease could be spread, some people believed it could be transmitted by being touched by an effected person.
In Australia there were not as many people from other countries or their presence was not felt as it is now, it would be rare to see someone from China, Africa, Japan or the Middle East in the street.
But Italian and english people had a strong presence.

School was school, illegal drugs were not common but students would often get caught having a puff of the odd cigarette behind the school gym.
The mid eighties were very good there was a lot of borrowed money floating around, this came to an abrupt climax in 1987 with the stock market crash. computers started replaceing people in jobs and some industries it became very competitive to keep employment. At one stage many businesses started closing. 60% of businesses had closed down.
Hair styles were full and fluffy for women, cloths were colourful, and make up tended to be loud. Divorce was common and peoples relationships appeared to be strained, it was a full spectrum decade but ended quitely, the information age was getting ready to roll.

Much like it was today.

CDs were a new format, we were still worried about Iran and Iraq, the Stock Market gave us the jitters and there was a Republican President with odd notions about what was best for america

It was fun and free. A lot more fun than today. People really had a much more free ideas and were more tolerant of each other.

not much different from today - but the world was greedier then - now it is just self-centred.


hate to disillusion the guy above me (who changed his answer before I could type this), but I was a computer operator from 1980 on (yeah yeah, I am THAT old) so there were computers, just not so prolific/all pervasive
