I want to go on a snowboarding holiday with friends but am unable to snowboard myself. where is good to go with other activities to do in nearby town?

The first suggestion has to be if you cannot snowboard yet then give it a try! You might like it, and it solves the problem of having nothing else to do when everyone else is out on their boards. Even if you are unable to snowboard then there will be some snowy sport you could have a go at.

Anyway, back to the question. I went to Are in Sweden a couple of years ago which is quite a nice little place with a reasonble amount of things to do in town if you're not boarding/skiing. There's dog sledding, skidooing, ice driving (take your licence) and a fair few shops and nice cafes etc. to keep you occupied. If Sweden won't suit then try and find a resort near e.g. Salzburg in Austria. In general France is a bad choice if you are not going to be out on the slopes as many of the resorts are purpose built and have nothing else for you to do!

A slight problem: you haven't mentioned WHICH town you are going to.
