Its called momentum. You have been moving at a fixed speed for a while, as you move up/down/along the escalator, then as you get to the end you have to start walking to keep moving at the same speed (and avoid falling) as you come off it.

The moment you start walking you are moving faster, at a sum of the speed it is moving and the speed you are walking.

Actually, I've noticed the OPPOSITE is true -- the handrail of the escalator moves at the EXACT same speed as the steps. How could it be otherwise? :) I mean, you wouldn't be able to even keep your hand on the rail, and still stand on your chosen step, if the rail kept moving away from you (either by being too fast or too slow)! I must admit I've no idea what you're talking about, because I have NEVER been on an escalator where the rail and steps didn't match. I would guess that the ones you're talking about are either really old, or malfunctioning.

The fact that you suddenly see far ahead of you (instead of just the climbing escalator) causes that effect. In the case of the flat ones, it may be the rubber support band at waist level that's moving down and away from you. There may also be a hlaf perfecnt of anxiety there. Not stress/fear, but just the anxiety to get ready to start walking normally again. And last but not least, when you see solid ground in front of you, you are more aware of the speed you were traveling at (e.g. you feel the speed of the airplane more while taking off with the ground as a reference than when you are in mid air, when you are actually travelling faster)
