My mother really dropped the ball on this one, I have to say. I remember one of my friends told me, in 5th grade, that the man PEED inside the woman!
I asked my mother about it one night, and all she said was, "No, it's actually a lot worse than that" but wouldn't elaborate. WTF?
I went for years thinking that people who had sex must be crazy, until health class in high school when I learned the truth.
Thanks, Mom!..........NOT!

Being a precocious child and an avid reader, I found some books on the subject "How to Talk To Your Kids About Sex", etc. and found out about it around 9 YO. When I got my first period, then did they attempt to give me the speech. I interrupted them and said that:I already knew how and where babies and born - THEY challenged me. I then began to regale them with my knowledge. Shocked and surprised wasn't the word!
They never underestimated me again.
They did ensure that I wouldn't put it to use, however. I told them that I HATED boys anyway (regardless of the fact that I was a tomboy) and making babies was the LAST thing on my mind! I just wanted to beat Peter Sweeting at the bike races!
Listening to your story and my classmates' "birds & bees" stories it's a wonder how ANY kids were born throughout the genererations with all of this misinformation. Wait, yeah, probably just because of it, people would have unprotected sex and kids were born anyway. I wonder how many of you out there were born as the result of a "accident"?
And parents NOWADAYS are STILL as not as not comfortable as my 50's parents were when they spoke with me. It is incredoulous to me that they leave it up to the SCHOOL to teach their kids about one (if not THE) of the most important facts of life that you will ever learn! I bet that if you asked 100 High School kids the "Facts of Life" most would not know that reproduction is all about. Oh yeah, they know the action - and even then really do not how to REALLY make love - just f**k, but not the consequenses or the realities of this knowledge and how your sexual organs really work.
I made sure that I had "The Talk" when mine entered 6th grade - and made it age appropriate for them. As time progressed, they were filled in the rest of the story long before they needed to know. I wish that MORE parents would speak frankly to their children about sex, that it is wonderful, a natural part of being human and that it is not dirty, and that there IS a difference between having sex and making love. My female and male children are wonderful lovers because of my teachings.

My parents responded in an age appropriate way from when i started asking questions - probably about 3 or 4. They always used the proper works. They gave as little information as would satisfy me and it didn't seem like that big a deal.
I think if they had blushed and said don't ask such questions i would have been obsessed by it lol.
Also like loads of british kids i was given the claire raynor Body Book which explains everything about the body from how your heart works to how babies are made for the under sevens.
Then at 10 i got the usbourne guide to growing up.

Learned about babies but not really descriptive enough to know about the birds and bees. I just finally became old enough where they assume I already knew about it besides sex ed was in 6th, 7th and 8th grade for a few short weeks a year!

No "birds and Bees" talk here either. To be honest, the whole subject was avoided all together. Since I was raised be my dad and no one else, I can't blame him. It would've been a horrible talk for us both. I can't remember where I heard about it. I guess I just learned about things bit by bit so it came on gradually. Who knows!

It's funny how the wrong information can be received.Wouldn't it be nice to be treated with some common respect. That maybe why we screw up,because we aren't treated, like we can handle the truth.Thank,God for the dictionary and the encyclopedia.

I had the talk off them when I was 21 and brought two girls home for a weekend...
They were about four years too late for me...and by the time they did get round to tell me about it, I think I knew more than they did!!
