I have a four month old baby boy who is just adorable. He is the best thing to ever happen to my husband and I. He is starting to develop quite the temper though. My husband and I would like to teach him to sign so that he can communicate with us a little easier. I know it may be a little early for him to pick up on the signs until he is six months, but hey it is worth a try to start early. I am just wondering what methods have worked for you other moms and dads out there. Did you use DVD's, books, or just plain old doing the signs over and over? I really appreciate all of your opinions. Thanks!

You can just use simple ASL signs with your baby (a great website is below). Start with one or two signs at first -- no more until your baby starts to pick up using signs himself. We used the signs for "milk/nursing" and "more" at first. Neither of my boys were able to sign back until they were around nine months old. Once they got the first two signs down, you can start adding a new sign every week or so. It works great!!

Your baby can't possibly have a temper at four months. He probably has needs he can't communicate and is frustrated by that.

Kids under 2 years aren't supposed to watch any TV or videos, so don't use the signing movies. I just taught my daughter signs I thought she would be interested in. I would just do the sign when I said the word- she caught on very quickly. If you don't know the signs, you can buy books to learn them or check the books out of the library.

At four months old, your baby has no idea how to "develope" a temper! He is merely reacting to something he dislikes. As far as teaching sign, it's just like learning to speak. They learn by watching and imitating what they see us doing. After all, deaf people don't use books to teach their babies sign language!
