He was bound by his duties as a king and his deeds and actions would have a direct effect on his subjects. He was definately responsible for his wife but he chose to keep his subjects happy and content. Somehow he must have been confident that Sita would understand his position and would take care of her self and the unborn child. After all it is destiny.
