I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

I had my laptop hard drive fail, and wound up putting an older one in it. I suddenly had a retro windows 95 machine. Yes, it can be done, and if the one you are putting in has all the software, it may at least boot and run enough to keep working. This is also a good way to make sure that is is a hard drive instead of something else.
You will find the Hard drive under a little door on the bottom of some units. If so, simply unscrew the door, and you will then find screws holding the drive in. Mine came in rack (brackets) brackets and all.
BTW, if you ever do need to remove the top from the bottom, each kind needs a special tool. These are quite inexpensive.
Good luck with your machine. I am still toddling along with a five year old one, but it is good enough for school work.
I keep thinking, though, if I keep the poor old thing much longer I will have to start putting it in nappies for the elderly. At least it runs!!!
