I need a new machine and want to support local trade (also, if they sell them, I am more likely to get a local service/engineer). Would you recommend Hotpoint or do you think I should go elsewhere and shop around a bit?

Hotpoint are not a bad product and are popular so parts are easily available but really your choice depends on how much washing you do, how many you're washing for and whether you're water metered or not, with the biggest consideration being what do you want to spend? Machines made by manufacturers like Siemens, Bosch and Miele are pricey but in most cases come with at least a two year guarantee at no extra cost. The top spec Miele will cost 1k but comes with a 10yr parts and labour guarantee in most cases for example-and is made to an incredibly high standard.Drum capacity will play a huge part too-go for 6 or 7kg if you're a family. Check out the efficiency ratings(rated for spin effectiveness, washing results and energy efficiency) and go for the best quality one you can afford. Shop on the Internet. This is a big item and you want the most for your money. If you're going to the bigger stores then avoid their breakdown services, you can get upgraded services cheaper from the manufacturer at much lower costs-and don't let them tell you any different!

Hotpoint are normally a good bet.

Its very good of you to say that you want to support local trade but in my experience the products in local electrical shops tend to be limited and more expensive than the ones you get in big retail warehouses. I'm all for supporting local trade and hate buying things at the local supermarket when I get them at my local grocer but with things like a washing machine I do think it would be best to go to a bigger store, like Currys, Comet, etc.

Not only would you have a greater product range to choose from, the prices aren't that expensive and they tend to come with guarantee's which cover any problems for anything up to 2 yrs.

You should shop around. You will always find some one to come and sevice a machine in your area its just that with different machine you may not have to have it serviced so often.

If your local trader only sells Hotpoint then he cannot complain if people shop else where to buy what they want - he runs a service not a dictatorship

We have a Hotpoint that's been going for 11 years, but that doesn't mean to say the next one will, just like cars really.
