You might do a paper on faculty salaries related to some other fact. For instance, the relationship between the amount paid to a full professor and the amount of endowment the college has. You can find the statistics to work from in The Chronicle of Higher Education, which publishes a statistical issue each year. You can find this publication in any college library.
Another idea - dropout rate freshman-to-sophomore year in private religious colleges vs. other private colleges. The U.S. News site has information about this. You would have to pay to have access to their premium site.

Check out the number of student tranferals from private colleges to governmental ones to start.
I don't have the US statistics, though can honestly say when private schools/colleges wash their hands of students.....where do they end up?

You could do a compare and contrast paper. Talk about the faculty to student ratio, the tuition costs, how they are funded, scholarships they give, programs they have, how many there are in the U.S. or any certain state. If you did compare/contrast, you could research all aspects of it and it would still be a solid thesis.
