I don't mind it at all. It is very 'British' and i think it's quite cute, but you always have some who are offended by just about anything! I once worked with a 'bird' who was deeply offended when anyone called her 'sweetheart' or 'darling'. She would tell the person who said it too! It was mostly old men or women, and you could see how confused they got when she confronted them. Terrible. You can call me what you like, as long as it's not b---h!

Yes it is.
Birds are beautiful, they sing all day long and they are also to be hunted by the hunters. Is that all that is to a woman?????
To deny a human being - be it a man or a woman - the human qualities of volition, agency, intelligence is the worst kind of insult and humiliation. Even though at the first glance it may not look so henious.

Not to me. It's a lovely word in use since the Middle Ages, and simply means "a lady".
I think it's a delightfully cheeky and affectionate slang term.
