Why should I be ridiculed in a marriage for leaving it when she stayed in it?

Because the person who 'stays in' always feels like they've been dumped on. The person leaving will ALWAYS be the bad-guy.

That's just an unspoken law of western society.

I left my first husband because he was cheating on me - and somehow I turned out to be the villain. Go figure.
