There are multiple representations that can be used to display data (words, tables, equations, graphs, formulas, etc.) . When charts, graphs, and tables are used they appeal to the visual learner by allowing them to SEE relationships, similarities and differences. It also allows the learner to visualize trends and patterns established. Learners who enjoy manipulating materials also enjoy producing charts, graphs, and tables because they actually get HANDS-ON experience with the data. I personally think that these approaches lead to more meaningful learning. :-)

Well, it helps you to explain more about data using just one picture and some words. It gives more outline of data, more about behavior of data with time or other factor. For example a graph of temperature v/s time will tell more than its explanation in words. So, you show more using less words. It also helps you for not remembering more things.
Remembering an explanation is more tough than remembering a chart.
