If you do not know any other language than Hindi, you may initially find it difficult. But, you will pick Tamil easily, if you are outgoing. There are some localities, like Sowcarpettai, where the Gujaratis live, where you can speak Hindi and even the vendors understand Hindi. You are welcome to Chennai. Be prepared for the potholes on the road, caused by the rains here.

To ur relief.... u will be able to find a lot of people from North. Basically in India... its not difficult shift from North to south or south to north. If you know english its more that enough. Except for ur local transportation.... say taking a auto or cab.... it would be better knowing the basics.

Ofcourse u will have to learn to put up with some mocking.....concerning ur language issue..... dont mind. It happens everywhere.

Enjoy ur stay.

there maybe a few problems with the language initially but believe u me that u can overcome everything with a smile on your lips & the correct attitude. its a metro with quite a cosmopolitan crowd & the hiccups u may face are very minor, especially when the locals see that u are making an effort & are being polite in asking them for assistance.

Welcome to chennai. It is a relatively clean and convenient city.
Language will not pose a problem if you are comfortable in English.Office/school life is better off with english.
However homemakers knowing only hindi will find it difficult to deal with daily routine life. Can pick up working knowledge of Tamil.
But people will be willing to help.
