I have a few. Hunt 'em down because they are all stunning. Some start slowly but give 'em a chance and you'll find out what I mean. Here we go: -
Condorman - Early 80's cheesy superhero flick
Sleuth - 70's yarn with Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier
Get Carter - 70's British Gangster movie with Michael Caine
To Live - Chinese (with English Subtitles) Story of a family's struggle throughout the reign of Chairman Mao
Man Bites Dog - Belgian (with English Subtitles) Comedy/Drama/Thriller/Mockumentary about a serial killer
Threads - BBC (UK) Film about the after effects of a Nuclear War
Trust me, every one a gem.
Hunt them down and Enjoy

It's not the best film i've ever seen but it's a cheesy soft porn film from the 70's/80's that stars Kevin Costner in his first ever film.
Bad Taste is a great film (Peter Jacksons first), done very cheaply with dodgy effects and acting...But turned out to be a pretty good film... I believe it was banned for awhile.
Death Race 2000 was ok... Starred a young Sylvester Stallone.

There was a film at the London Film Festival this year called Half Nelson, absolutely amazing - go see it if it gets released here.
Also under this question, I would go with The Station Agent and the Infernal Affairs trilogy (the first one is the film that The Departed is based on and is awesome).

SHANE it made such an impact as it was the most realistic "Cowboy" authentic for the time. Jack Palance was at his best and "wee" Alan Ladd underplayed the Hero brilliantly. Brandon Wilde shouting Shane..... at the end just made it the best Western. Sorry! Ones you have never heard of! A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS . Just great all round acting and a brilliant ending.

I wouldn't say that this is the best film I have ever seen, but it is a very old black and white one , called " The Glass Mountain " starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddie, it was made in the late thirties / early forties and I saw it on TV in the fifties. So I reckon that unless you are 60 +, you won't have heard of it. !!!
