Are Cavern and Cave synonyms? Are contract and expand synonyms too? It's not in my thesaurus...

An eddy is, in fact, a small whirlpool, whereas a whirlpool is not necessarily an eddy. So, it's probably not a true synonym, but pretty close.

A cavern is a cave, so that is a synonym.

Contract is an antonym (opposite) of expand.

Contract is a homograph, (same word different meanings).
It can mean to reduce in size,(as does your example), or an agreement.

An eddy the smarl swirl that happens in something fluid (like water or wind) that happens when it moves around an obstacle. It's like when you have rocks in the river, and the water swirls around it. A whirlpool is a big huge vortex (like someone just pulled the plug in a bath.) It's a matter of degree, a whirlpool is really big deep eddy :)

There can also be eddies in the space-time continuum, but they usually don't have sofas :)

A cavern is a large cave. "Contract" and "expand" are opposites :)

eddy & whirlpool - the same, although I tend to think of an eddy as smaller and/or with less pronounced circularity

cavern & cave - the same, although I tend to think of cave as smaller and/or one "room"

contract & expand - antonyms
