I have worked in EMS and Fire with females and can honestly say that 98% of the time, there was never any consideration about their sexuality as far as the job went.
I have also had the opportunity to interact with female police officers and have found them all to be professional and capable, never a problem.
Then again, i also live in the US; I don't know if your question is specific to any particular culture or country.
The problems that have arisen were due to concerns about whether or not the person was hired because of "affirmative action". This is the awful act of hiring someone not because of their ability or experience but simply because they will show that the organization has a set number or minorites or women at work.
A police academy graduate gets passed over for the assignment in a particular city. The post instead goes to a female who was twenty points behind this guy all through the academy - all so that the city in question can say, "We have 600 police officers, of which 250 are women."
In my mind skill outweighs sex any time.
