This question could take an hour to answer. I'm not going to tell you to download anything or check for spyware. But I've helped a few of my friends with slow puters and they all had one thing in common. Too many items on their start up list. These are the things that start automatically when you start your computer. I have my list down to three items. I actually looked at my friends today. He had 30.

Here's what you do. Click on Start.. run.. type in msconfig..click ok. a box will pop up. click on the far right tab. startup.. now look at the list of items with check marks next to them. I bet you have a bunch. Every one of those is starting automatically and running in the back ground. You don't need most of those. The only thing I have starting automatically is my Nortons. That's three items. You'll have to figure out what each one is and determine if you need it. Just do a search for each item. You'll find a site which lists each one. I may post one.

The best thing to be done will be to do a low level format on your computer and reinstall the os..Your hard drive will be like new..(Right from the Factory). Then you can install your OS of choice and see how it goes..There is no much use in installing more programs to reduce the slowness of your PC..Rather than trying to repair your registry and installing more spyware softwares...that bite deep into the kernel of the operating system, Just Low level Format ur PC and make it like new..

1.Clean your trash files every day. For doing so, download CCleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com/) and run it daily before shutting down your computer.
2.Use its 'Issues' section to get rid of unused registry keys.
3.Remove too many programs from startup list.
4.Keep atleast 35% of your C:space free.
5.Use a good antivirus, antispyware and firewall and scan your computer once every week.
5.Defragment your hard drives once every month.
6.Keep a virtual memory(RAM) booster.

If you don't know how to do all this, you can take help from your technician or elders.
Good Luck!!!
:-)
