if the millenium bug was a set up, obviously Microsoft would profit from it since it was rumored to be an intentional "glitch" in their operating systems for following date formats of mm/dd/yy instead of mm/dd/yyyy. the millenium bug fix became an auto update feature for Windows 98 up. Windows 95 and earlier operationg systems required their users to download the patch manually.

I can't speak for all companies, but at my work we backed up all of the systems and set the date to roll into 00 without any preparations to our systems. We were unable to conduct business as usual on our test run, and everything was pretty much screwed up. Dates and financial calculations were WAY off. We spent a small amount of money, (small business) to update the system, and it worked without a problem.
I'm sure there was a bunch of money wasted on the Y2k bug. But if our business is any indication, most of it was necessary, and that's why there was no event.

Yes. As the money wasting non-event of all time it must surely take the biscuit. Lots got rich, mainly because we had the likes of bloody Richard and Judy telling us - and showing us - how they were building up a stock of batteries amongst a load of other goods of course) so that when all the power stations failed at midnight (WHY!!!!!) they would still have light, so everybody rushed out an bought batteries - which had not surprisingly just gone up in price ! ! ! That's just one example, and to prove my point, there are shops in London now selling perfectly good (and well in date) "AA" batteries at £1 for 30 (yes, thirty!). I rest my case !

The fact that it looked like a non-event, and that nothing major went wrong, just shows that the money was not wasted - if it had been left, there would have been beddlam. Because the industry recognised and sorted the problem before it was too late, there was little impact.

I thought fixing all the computers caused it not to be a terrible situation. Was it a really a waste of money?

Yes, I remember it well. Alot of us made good money doing overtime. There may well have been a plot but I'm not privy to this kind of inside information.
