Actually a child who exhibits mild retardation at this age, especially a boy, can surprise you and grow up to be a fully functional contributor to society. What ever he enjoys and wants to do he can study and prepare. And it looks like your area is preparing for his future as well. They even have a disabilities act. Do not count your son out yet. He may surprise you.

well why don't u just ask him what type of job he would like to have. in my experience those with mild retardation are able to voice what makes them happy and what makes them sad or mad. maybe u could start there. he could like a toy store, pet store, resturant, lawn maintence,or others where there is not too much stimuli to distract him. not sure if there is a Goodwill Industries in ur area this is a great place for work and developing careers for those with disabilities. Look in ur yellow pages for social services or division of rehabilitation services they should be able to help.:)Good Luck!

I have worked in the Mental Health field for a number of years and there are a lot of jobs for people with mild MR. I have had lots of good luck placing them in jobs in grocery stores, retail stores, restaurants, service industries such as lawn care, etc. I have placed a number of custodial staff as well. He can earn a living that pays his bills and provides benefits as well. Try schools especially as most custodial staff get benefits. It's going to depend on his functional level at the time he applies. Be SURE to contact your local mental health agencies for assistance.

The best jobs for these students are whatever jobs they want and would enjoy doing; just like you and me. Your local Regional Center and Dept. of Rehabilitation can provide free job coaching/support.

If a student wants to be something unrealistic (e.g., brain surgeon) after you explain to them the requirements and the difficulty levels to obtain this job, they probably would no longer want to do this.

Make it clear to them that the myth that "You can do ANYTHING you set your mind to" is FALSE. For example, short-statured people and blind people can't be air force pilots, no matter how hard they try and set their minds to it. But they CAN work in the air force in a variety of other positions. Overweight people can't be Cosmo models; but they can work for Cosmo doing something else.

It's ok for students to dream, but make sure they learn to set realistic goals.

perchance Leo or Aries reason those are the main classic sounding names there. luckily, i do no longer would desire to try this. perchance Libra if no longer those 2. If i in my opinion had to p.c.. a fourth place call, it may be Gemini which i visit in no way call somebody that. Then the nickname would be Gem. Lol somewhat no longer maximum cancers. I easily have an Aries buddy, his call is Ram. twist of fate? i think of no longer.

the choices are endless. Id say whatever he wants, go for it.. If he has enough sense about him to know right and wrong and can handle lifes little problems, why not go for the gold.. Im sure there are quirks in all of us and all histories genius had a little quirkiness in them.. didnt they say Einstein didnt know how to tie his shoes?... Dont hold your son back... support his wishes and try to stimulate his interests in every way you can.. goodluck!
