Personally I have a gas hob and an electric double oven/grill. Not sure about ecologically or financially but it makes cooking a heck of a lot easier! Hob cooking is instant heat, on or off and the electric fan assisted oven works great!
Plus if you have only a gas hob you're using less gas than before anyway!

Your bills will be no different. And please understand, the gas you use is irrelevant. If you go gas, you'll burn gas. And if you go electric, the utility company will burn gas to generate the electricity. So the real question is cooking.
Have you ever seen an electric cooker in a restaurant? No, you haven't -- and for a good reason. Gas creates an even heat that cooking requires. Electricity gives very uneven heat. Some areas of the pan are underheated and some overheated. This causes uneven cooking, as well as increased scorching on pans, thus making them wear out faster, and ever so much more difficult to clean because of the burns. If you have a choice, go gas. You won't regret it.

Ecologically, no difference. Before natural gas was discovered it was manufactured and when it runs out it will be manufactured again. Electricity requires conversion of either oil or coal so both deplete natural resources. Where I live the prices are about the same. Gas and Electric are market competitors and that dictates that prices must remain on par with each other.
Cooking:-
Gas gives instant heat and control. But it is a bit harder to clean up a gas cooker.
Electric you have to wait for the heat and for temperature changes but the appliances are easier to keep clean.
Both are hazardous so care is needed in either case.

RE:
New Cooker - Gas or Electric?
I'm about to buy a new cooker. With all the worries about our gas supplies depleting would it be more ecologically sound if I bought an electric oven. Will my bills lower as the price of gas has risen so dramatically? I've never used one before - do they do as good a job as gas? Pros and...

What I really hate about electric is the stove top "burners." Cooking food is always so much better on real gas burners. You can control a flame: it's responsive. With electric, the burner changes temperature really slowly. No chef will choose to use electric, ever.
Other than that, electric is only all that good if you are on a renewable plan with your electric company, otherwise there are all kinds of irresponsible ways power companies get electricity. So, aside from that, gas is alright. And it seems electricity is still more expensive in many places (like west coast, USA) but it depends on where you are / what country.

Get a combination cooker which has gas burners on the top, for control of the heat, and an electric oven to keep an even temperature. Electric burners are a right pain to cook on - slow to heat up and you burn yourself afterwards when they don't cool down. Similar situation with ceramic, but they're preferable to electric.

Sponges are always better from gas. And joints of meat. Burning gas gives off water vapour and keeps the air in the oven humid so they don't dry out.
If you go electric you can counteract the dryness by putting a container of water at the bottom of the oven,.
Electric rings are just horrible. You could go for a gas hob electric oven combination?

I've got an electric fan oven and a gas hob. The fan oven is great as cooking times are reduced (using less electricity) and I like the gas hob for the control it offers me. We consequently use less gas and electricity, which can only be a good thing both for our pockets and for the environment.

Ive had both but prefer electric, get a ceramic hob they look nice and are really easy to clean. Also I feel safer with electric, always get paranoid about leaving gas on! If I have something simmering for 20-30 mins and have to pop out, at least I know it will be ok, whereas with gas always use to worry about the flame going out.

I have to agree with Kevin- most electricity comes from gas-powered stations so that won't make a difference. what will make a difference is being able to change the temperature instantly so you don't end up burning food and not having to waste resources and time waiting for the hob to heat up. (plus the safety risk of hobs still being very hot after you've turned them off-they don't always glow so that you can tell).
I've had both and I will always choose gas over electric-it makes your life so much easier!
