Well I guess that depends on your point of you. This is a new age, and I believe the definition for empire has to evolve. When it comes to mass market, consumption, military, money (even though we are in debt) etc...We are the best (that would put us up right there with Rome as being the top nation of the world)! All good things must come to end though, but as far as absolute rule over all nations. I don't think so because with the fall of Rome (the world's last true great empire) we have learned that conquering, and ruling over nations is not at all what it is cracked up to be. Sure people have tried, and all have failed by a land side. It would be interesting though wouldn't it? Another "Roman Empire" by true definition, but I think it's a fantasy not a reality.

...No. Persians, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, English were replaced by national identities/countries...there are no more frontiers...once the MAD - mutually assured destruction premise was realized with nuclear weapons, the peace from a world war has been kept for 6 decades...no one can tell for sure, just like no one can predict trends for sure...people like to think they can, but they can't due to all the unforseen variables...polictically - maybe the U.S. would merge with with Sth America and Canada and Mexico and become A United States of the Americas....or the E.U. to exand on its principles and unite into a confederation of all European states...as far as one country and by war...I would have to say no. There is too much political pressure from all sides to invade anyone...in the CNN age it is very unlikely...
...America likes to think it has an empire but like Rome it will crumble from within, as all great empires do. Lack of discipline being the main factor. One large key trigger event can collapse the so called empire as it did for everyone else...the soviet empire was crushed in a day when soldiers refused to shoot on innocent civilians and the wall came down...the USA seems more divided than ever to me...it disdn't work with Greece, it didn't work with Rome, it couldn't work with the colonial empires and it won't work with a fractured country of idealists...that have lost their ideals. It may not happen in our lifetimes...but they will go as others have before them...
...no one country will have a vast empire again...

Old-style empires are based on old-style economics.
I dont beleive anyone ever will see another vast Old-Style Empire, they are inefficient and cumbersome and all have fallen as a result.
With instantaneous monetary transactions, fast transport of goods, and the ready availability of free labor throughout most of the countries in the world, you do not need to invade and conquer to add value to your own economy. The process also generally tends to add value to other countries economies as well, thus it is mutually beneficial.
Call that a new type of Empire if you wish.

There won't be any more borders. We're all becoming too interconnected. It's a global economy and that will drive a global job market and that will blur border/nationalistic issues. The Baconian concept of plunder and domination has proven to be disastrous for the entire planet.

there's really only one answer to that, and that's America. out of the 160 odd countries there are on this planet only 28 do not have any kind of American influence, military, diplomatic whatever. that's a vast empire, the biggest by any other empire in history. we [Britain] could have had a huge slice of or possibly all of America not that long ago.

America already has an empire, an Empire that we all subscribe to, and that is a cultural one. American culture invades all aspects of our lives through the media. American music, TV programmes, films, cuisine and language are all now ingrained in all our own cultures.

The USA already has an empire. It has taken over many parts of the world, cultural and government.

Read Collosus by Niall Fergusson-He makes a pretty good case that the USA is already sitting on a huge modern empire.
Great question!

I doubt it it is really frowned upon to be a aggressor nation. The U.N. would put a stop to it. Economics will be the weapons of the future. Look at China becoming a economic superpower.
