Yesterday the machine hanged and both my keyboard and mouse were gone; then after dozens of switching off and on my keyboard is back but the mouse is not there; I am crippled and can do nohthing. Help and please please please let me solve this and don't refer me to pages to read about it.

it depends on what you have-if wireless mouse then try reinitiating the connection, or it could be battery. try the connection on back of pc, try a different mouse, if it's an optical mouse is there a light on the bottom indicating power to it? the list goes on . unplug mouse and turn on pc- it will probably tell you no mouse is connected, then do it again with mouse plugged in and see if it detects it. it's all about process of elimination or as we like to call it diagnostics

Restart the machine and take the mouse and keyboard pins out of the sockets and then shutdown the PC and then connect them both again and Start the PC it should work ok

what u mean by switching off try to restart ur computer by using the keyboard if it is still not working go the control panal from strat menue and selest the mouse icon, choose hardware tap and then click on properties in the general tap check if the device usage is (enable) if not switch it, if it's enable, try to update driver by chosing driver tap and select update driver you will need mother board cd.

Take the rope off your computer, hanging it won't help.
Check to be sure your ports are enabled in BIOS.
If that doesn't work, try a different mouse.

assuming PS2 mouse - could be the PS2 has carked it on the motherboard.
Try a USB mouse or a switchbox that runs from USB and lets you plug in your mouse and keyboard

THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS WHY IT DONT WORK.1ST.LOOSE CONNECTION FROM MOUSE TO USB SOCKET.2ND.MOUSE NEEDS THE WHEELS INSIDE CLEANING CAREFULLY.3RD.CONNECTION INSIDE OF MOUSE BROKE.4TH. IS THE BALL TOUCHING THE MAT.RECCOMEND BUY NEW MOUSE.NEVER BUY JUST ONE GET TWO OR THREE.ALWAYS HANDY IF ONES GOES WRONG.THEY ARE ALL FAIRLY CHEAP .MINE COST NO MORE THAN THREE POUND EACH.HOPE THAT HELPS.

You can check with connecting another mouse if that also not work then you have to check socket and motherboard

It's just happened to me fer chrisake! Follow your lead down to your tower where it plugs in and pull the little sh###t out! then plug it in again, is it working now? If not then you'll have to re-install it.
