Because we are not legally adults until age 18. Children are not allowed to vote, thank god.

That always bugged me when I was 16/17 too. Wasn't allowed to vote but I sure as hell had to pay taxes. I don't know if I want to wade into any arguments about maturity because I know some very worldly and intelligent 16 year olds and some incredibly foolish forty year olds. Still you gotta draw a line somewhere and I think 18 is a good spot. Thing is if the line is drawn there by the guy at the polling booth, the line ought to be drawn there for the guy at the revenue agency too.

Children are easily swayed, even young adults are too. When democratic elections were established, it was usually accepted that adults are of the age of 18. From the age of 18, society assume you have a greater understanding of life and can be held responsible for your actions. However, before the age of 18, society does not have the correct "insurrance" to cover you to take up such a huge responsibility, and hence you can't vote until you are 18. That aside, a trend developing in many country with non-compulsory voting is that less and less people have the time to vote, even though voting day is a public holiday (or Saturday).

I am still learning a lot and I am forty. As time passes and knowledge is learned maturity is gained but not always. You will find as you get older and look back at things you have done you realize you were being stupid. This is exspecially true in younger people below the age of eighteen. But I have meet many people who stay idiots well through their college years and many teenagers smarter than them. The reason overall is if it has to do with freedoom it will be regulated by laws and as you get older even passing that eighteen year old mark your freedoom is drowned out by responsibilty so be happy because this may be the years when you are most free to truly do what you want.

Good question. There has to be a limit and it was set at 18. 40 years ago it was 21. You could drink, die in Vietnam, be locked up for a felony but couldn't vote. And if 16 year olds, why not 14 year olds?

18 is considered the threshold to adulthood.

When I started voting the age was 21.

I know some very mature 16-year-olds, but most will be even more mature and even better qualified to vote in two more years.

because already most 18 year olds dont vote and as the other person mentioned because we are tro mature to think what we really want.

They should have an IQ test to determine voting eligability. Some so called "Adults" don`t have the brains they were born with. This is how "Clueless " politicians get elected, because some moron likes the color of his tie, rather than the policies he advocates. Societies idiots need removing from the equation.

because the majority of those between that age still haven't left the nest and have no conception of the real world, taxes, and social economic problems, they only know whats been taught to them in schoold or at home.
