Why did Klingons evolve into bumpy-forehead beings? When did they start getting those ridges on their heads and why?

I think the first time we saw the butt-headed Klingon were in ST: the Motion Picture...

After that they were adopted by all subsequent Star Trek universe.

During the originally series the Klingon were just greasy guys...mostly due to budget constraints.

The original kingons were supposed to be Russians in outer space so they were made up to look like Russians in outer space. Then came Star Wars and the idea that not aliens have to look like humans or speak the same language. So with the idea came up for a new television series the new look Klingons went into effect. They had remodled other aliens for Star Trek movies and now they would remodle the Klingon's as well. I think alot of it had to do with the thought that the actor that played Warf was actually black. Without tthe head dress that would take some explaining. they didn't care to explain so th enter the head dress and the strait hair wigs.
