It will align with whatever magnetic field it is closest to or align itself on a piece of metal. If it isn't close to either of these, it will point in any random direction.

In space, a compass needle will point to the strongest magnetic field that is within a distance to influence the needle. This could be a natural body such as a star, planet, moon, etc., or it could be a field from a man-made object such as a space vehicle.

Quote: 'Gyroscopic compasses do not matter upon magnetism in any respect. they are set to point to the North celeb even as they are made and proceed to finish that as long as they are powered. Even in close by area, interior the picture voltaic equipment, they'll proceed to point to Earth's North celeb. i believe the solar and Jupiter both have magnetic fields. The compass would aspect to the solar's North pole in a lot of of the picture voltaic equipment if it became gentle adequate.' i'm hoping it really is a few help.
