OK, Since we all know that the earth was spinnin cool until the moon ran into it and put this planet on "BAKE" and then with it's slower rotation, all the water molocules floatin round de air began fallin an made de ocean. Now with heat, light, water and earth elements, a little wiggle and OMG the whole earth upstartsta bubble in a boiling mess of life. So, we know this fo'shizzy. But yo know what I done Wizzy? I'm wunderin if we got just a long ride in front of use on the way to the sun. Kinda like a quarter rollin down the damn funnel chute of a charity "Hey throw your money in here and watch your money spin round and round untill it's gone never to be seen again, thingy." How come we aren't taking more drastic steps to contact an alien Taxi cab?

Well, you are correct in that sittin' around will end in our collective lifes' destruction. And attempts at proving life beyond Earth are ongoing. Many of the missions to Mars are currently trying to prove that (among other things). SETI is also an attempt to see or hear if anything is out there. But that's a shot in the dark (har, har, de har har).
There are some significant steps being made to make spacecraft that can go "fast". VASMIR (plasma rocket) among other things.
The two technologies that will drive us into the next level of abilities are quantum and nano technology. Those will have significant impact on everything we build and contemplate.
Eventually our sun will get hotter, that could boil off our oceans (way before the sun bloats). The Earths core could also cool enough that our magnetic field dissappears. This would cause our atomosphere to slowly whisp away.
Being able to live in more hostile environments with nearly 100% recycling ability is our greatest challenge. WIth that, we can start making our way out of this solar system and on to the next.
