how long is the legal detention by a person caught with a knife is his position?

a police offecer caught a 21 year old male with a knife carried in ththe side of the road and put him in jail without any case filed against him by the apprehention officer. can he be detained in the detention cell and how long?

has to be charged or released within 24 hours

did he have a concealed permit? 24 hrs is normal for no charges
if there are other reasons of suspicion or whatever

its a felony to conceal a deadly weapon, so if he had it stored away somewhere he could be charged with a prison sentence.
