I had to toss my old emachines PC, because the motherboard just blew the hell up. Now, the computer doesn't even turn on. I took the Hard Drive out and now need to transfer all of my data onto my new HP Pavillion.

Your best bet would be to find a computer technician who can capture the data from your hard drive and put it on CDs or other transferable media for you.

Are you sure you've lost your motherboard? A bad power supply can cause the same symptom you describe, and power supplies aren't all that expensive.

I would not try to install the hard drive in the new computer, since that might void your warranty. Also, you have an operating system in it that might mess things up. If you were able to restart your old computer you could probably transfer the data with a crossover cable.

The place that sold you the HP Pavilion might be able to refer you to someone who can help you out.

You need to take the old Hard Drive and put it on an IDE cable and connect it to the motherboards other IDE controller or as a slave on en existing one. You need to then make sure that you make it a slave if on the same cable (assuming your existing one is a master) , connect the old HD, boot up the computer, and then go in the bios and make sure the computer detects it.
You need to make sure that if the old HD is formatted in FAT or FAT32 ( probably not FAT...pre 98) then the new HD is FAT also. Or Else you wont be able to transfer the data. Then when it is detected you need only to copy the data over to the new HD thru an explorer interface. You can slave the hard drive to the PC and transfer the data. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/ hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

you can attack the HARD DRIVE to the secondary port on the motherboard , boot up your computer and transfer the data. Or you could just hook up the old hardrive and keep it as a secondary drive.

Put it in an external rack, hook that rack up and there you go - you have an external hard drive. From this point on it's like with any other external memory just copy the files from one place to another.

with an external 3.5" HDD (hard disk drive). You might be able to borrow one, if you know someone in the business. If you end up buying one, they are always useful for back-up to prevent this happening again in the future.
