It depends on which country. But that being said, I don't think hitchhiking is safe for anybody. Men do get raped and/or stabbed also ya know. Sad but true. P.S. Sorry but I couldn't pick you up even if I wanted to as I do not have a car! Besides, you could well be some psychobitch with a 9mm or a sharp knife in your purse, am I right?

It wouldn't matter how someone dressed. Here's why:
Six years ago a guy called the FBI to say something such as wanting to turn himself in because he felt like committing a crime. His call wasn't taken seriously. He went on to kill a man in his fifties, another man with (if I recall correctly) Alzheimers disease in his sixties, and a young man of nineteen years old who had been raised (according to his father) "to trust people" and who had given this killer a ride. The nineteen-year-old, Jonathan Rizzo (look up his name on the Internet) wasn't just shot. He was tied to a tree and stabbed (and whatever else).
Not all predators want to attack someone sexually. Not all want to rob someone. Some are just would-be killers (sometimes hopped up on drugs that make them crazy) who feel like killing someone - anyone. When it comes to the type of crime you ask about there is no rhyme or reason to who gets selected as a victim other than whether they have given some freak the opportunity. Its not a gamble that's worth taking, because there's no undoing things once they're done.
The handsome and apparently well liked Jonathan Rizzo was young and apparently was like other young people who think "it can't happen to me". That's what murdering freaks count on, and all the "I-know-how-to-take-care-of-myself" in the world is usually not enough to handle oneself when dealing with some freak who planned things all out.
Yes - my answer is kind of lecture-y; but I couldn't help it.

I wouldn't hitchhike cross country...but if I had to, blue jeans, button shirt, stetson and hiking boots would be my choice. Shows you're tough but down home country.

I think something in between would be best. To not look too scary or vulnerable, but try to get people to see you as an honest person who won't do harm, but will defend himself if needed.
