In our culture nudity is considered excessive sexual expression. I can't say exactly where this originated. Many ancient and even medieval European societies were very open about sexual matters, including nudity.
I think possibly it could be at least partly a holdover from some of the more puritan groups of the post-Renaissance period that led to our own Pilgrims and Puritans of New England.
Those who favor more open attitudes about nudity say that nudity is not sexual. Many people are not all that attractive without their clothes on and familiarity breeds contempt in many cases.
There is also a part of our culture that finds what is not revealed enticing. When you reveal it that sort of spoils things.
For myself, I have never practiced nudism and am not likely to, but I do think we are a little too prudish on this subject and would like to see a less sexually-fixated society.

Because many people, especially in the US, continue to associate nudity with sexuality, which makes it automatically something "unacceptable to moral people". They fail to realize that simple nudity in appropriate situations (at the beach, pool, with friends outdoors, etc.) is overwhelmingly NOT sexual, and should not be looked upon as something indecent.
Many other cultures are free from this hang-up, but the Puritan ethics and values are still alive an well in America.
From a personal point of view, I absolutely love to be naked at the beach or pool or anyplace else it's appropriate, and I am probably one of the most moral people you'd want to meet.
Enjoying simple nudity is not immoral in ANY way, is appropriate in MANY ways, and is FUN!
Good luck with your paper! I'm a first year grad student...wish I had topics like this one!

I think peoples ideas and thoughts and feelings on nudity come from either religion based ethics or the way they were raised. Yes I think that in some walks of life or countries it is. The human body is something just to be shared between husband and wife. There is nudity and then there is porn...the 2 get confused. There has been nudity in art for years. I bring up my children to think of nudity as being natural. I don't flaunt it but I don't run to cover myself up if they come into the bathroom or my room, why make them think it's wrong. I think it helps them to grow up with a healthy attitude towards their own bodies. Too many kids grow up with hangups.... why should this be one.

Becose some people feel ashamed about being nude.... so they are bothred about the fact other people are nude.
It's progectionisum for them to feel other people should be too.
People that are not ashamed of there body arn't bothered by nudity.
There realy is no other reson.... anything else is just an exscuse.
Edit- as to above answer...if you wana pull the bible into it... They just found out they where naked, the fact they COULD cover themselfs was not something they understood.... then they felt ashamed of themselfs and hid. God whanted to know why there where becose there wasn't a reason for them to!
There is nothing wrong with nudity... just some people are bothered by it becose they feel ashamed of there body and think other people should be too.

In society nowadays we have the belief that it is indecent to show the body nude.
Ha ha... What would they do if they knew about college art classes? The nude body is art yeah.
Also there's a bunch of crazy raving phsycos out there just looking for "prey".
In our world nudity comes to cause problems. More like our society.
There's alot of taboo on it.
The confines of society inhibit us.
Hope this helps. ^_^

Its one of the most obvious double standards of human beings. While they frown at nudity, on the sly they would go to any extent to be able to see nude people!

It is only frowned upon in some cultures. Here in Italy it is a natural thing. We have many nude family beaches. To see a women without her top on regular beaches is not uncommon.
Nudity is a religious thing that has seeped into many cultures.

This is because of what people have turned it into.so now nudity is related to sex and is being commercially exploited.
To be nude is natural but that doesn't mean you have to show everyone your body....cause what you have...everyone has too, whether fat, slim etc.
