It depends on the situation: in a communal bath or sauna, nudity is accepted. But the reason why nudity is frowned upon is because of religions and culture influencing our culrutal norms. In many religions, one is taught shame and modesty. As a result, we immediately associate the naked body with sex, instead of something beautiful and natural.

Nudity is also rather impractical and unhygienic. Can you imagine a nude society where you really have to look and wipe before you sit down on the bus!

I have been a nudist for more than 40 years.Every answer here so far is a valid one.Yes the book of Genesis did say God covered Adam and Eve,But that was after they sinned.Prior to that nudity was in the garden of eden,Genesis 3:9-11.Once you read this you can say it goes either way and thats true.
The clubs I have been to have a strict set of rules,and the violators can be suspended for a weekend or permanatly.These rules protect all that are in the resort,park or club.
Grant it with the various organizations that promote good clean living and moral decency down and condemd nudism.They are atemptong to run the lives of everyone .they want you to beleive their way only.
The government passes anti nuduty laws to protect us from sexual crimes.Most all of the sexual crimes happen in areas that are not nudist clubs.In the years I have been a nudist I can only recall 3 events of sexual miscoduct at any club.All 3 preditors were detained and arrested at the club.
Being nude is comfortable.The warmth of the sun and the natural state of being nude is not obscene.The human mind makes it dirty.
I am over 50 and still practice nudism.As long as man looks at the world as being dirty then it will be.But when man looks at the different peoples of the world then the act of nudity will be observed as natural.

Western culture is largely an outgrowth of Christian culture... it may be diverse and more individualized as years go by, but the mark of Christian values prevails; God cast Adam and Eve out of Eden for eating of the tree of Knowledge; at that moment they could "see" and realized they were NAKED (not Nude) and were ashamed and tried to clothe themselves -- to cover their shame. So in the eons that followed, to be without clothes is to be in shame --- as if our nature has something perverse or wrong with it that it must be covered up. It is only in the aspect of "Art" that to be naked becomes transformed into being "nude": without clothes, but WITHOUT shame, too.
