I'm sure you mean "Flamenco" not "Flamingo." This particular word is a spanish word. Flamenco is a dance that developed in Andalusian Spain which is when Spain was ruled by the Moors (Arabs). This particular dance was done by the gypsies and is a hybrid of Spanish gypsy styles and Arab dances of the time. Flamenco has roots in Arab dance as well as spanish folk dance. I would highly reccomend watching The Romany Trail parts 1 and 2 as well as Latcho Drom. These show some very good Gypsy dances including Flamenco and talk about the Gypsy migrations from India to the Middle East and Europe. The Romani gypsies of Spain claim to have come from Egypt and so their dances could be influenced by the dance of the Egyptian Ghawazee. Although, there are very few recorded documents of dance throughout history so many details are not known about it's origins but it is well accepted by most scholars in the field to be a Spanish Arab hybrid developed by the Gypsies who had migrated to spain. The term is Spanish although it is possible it has Arabic influence being as it was developed under the Arab rule of Spain (Andalusia).

Like everyone else says, there is no such dance as Flamingo, and we flamenco dancers get really annoyed when people call it that!
Flamenco is not really Spanish. It is the dance of the gypsies who live in Spain, who don't regard themselves as Spanish. The dance form has been taken up by the Spaniards, but the gypsies themselves make a distinction between gypsy performers and Spanish ones (who they feel aren't the real deal).
The origins of the dance are lost in the mists of time. It's generally agreed that it came from the East somewhere, and probably started out in India. Some people say the word "gypsy" comes from "Egyptian" but that's disputed. There's no doubt that the combination of influences that happened when the gypsies got to Spain, created something that is unique.

I've even checked online to see if there was a flamingo dance but there wasn't all I found about flamingo dance was this funny and kind of annoying site:
http://www.flamingodance.net/
But I figured that's not what you meant... :)
Anyhow, FLAMENCO dance, sometimes misspelled as flamingo, is a type of Spanish (from Spain). You can find some more information on it on these websites:
http://www.andalucia.com/flamenco/whatis.htm

Hope this helps. I took a Spanish dance class and we learned a little bit of flamenco. It was pretty difficult both the footwork and also the styling. It's very internalized and reflects a lot of emotion and internal torment. The dancer feels how to dance and it's usually improvises as he/she goes.

The dance is called Flamenco. Flamingo is a bird and is totally unrelated. Flamenco is a Spanish word.
