Codecs are really an addition to the soundcard that is already installed on your computer. You should un-install, then re-install the drivers for your soundcard if you are not getting output. As for the codecs, the files are installed in your window's system folder, and are not to be copied manually. I would look for a 'setup' or 'install' file on the cd, and run that once you get your sound back.

You don't say what OS or what sound file type. Anyhow, most codecs have an install program that comes with them. The problem is: why install 50 codecs when the real problem might be just one codec.
If you are using Win Media Player, it is best if you try and update that.
If that doesn't work, I suggest you try the link below. It will offer you a tool to diagnose. At the least it will inform you of the TYPE of codec needed and it should give you a clue where other codecs are located on your system. Could be Win MediaPlayer has a folder called "codec" inside the MediaPlayer folder.

If you need any kind of codecs to play something, I would highly recommend using the Combined Community Codec Pack ( http://www.cccp-project.net/ ). However, in your case, you describe losing your sound. That wouldn't be a codec issue if it's system-wide. If the problem exists outside of whatever media player you're using, chances are that you have an error or corruption in your sound card driver. I'd right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, choose "Properties" and then click the "Hardware" tab. From there, choose the "Device Manager." Then look in the sound, video, etc. section to see what kind of sound card is installed in your computer. If there are problems, it would show up with a red X on it. If not, then take note of what kind of card you have and then visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. Install that and it should fix whatever problem you're having.

it doesn't really work that way, look for a setup.exe on that CD you got and doubleclick it. Follow the onscreen instructions.
