I think Mr Hussein will indeed hang.
The reason is simple, he must be stopped from talking. Had he died before he was condemned, then he could have become a martyr. Now he will simply become a victim to some, a man who received his just desserts to others.
I don't think that casualties will increase that much in Iraq; afterall Mr Hussein was from a minority group in Iraq, so the moment he lost power, his minority was oppressed. It is doubtful that the oppression would increase now, or the retaliation would increase because of his 'martyrdom'.
If the article in lancet was right (and their methods seem alright), the number of deaths in Iraq is already appalling. But this is unlikely to degenerate faster due to an eventual execution of Mr Hussein; a blip may be, but not a change in trend.
The trend in deaths is due to infighting - which is unlikely to change - and to 'resistance' to the 'occupation'/'puppet government'.
What I think will be the biggest impact of the eventual execution of Mr Hussein is the fact that he will not live to tell his tale. We must not forget that Britain and the US supported Iraq against Iran, and Mr Hussein's regime too. He was even visited by some high placed people in today's US government.
What tales he might tell could open our eyes to what is really going on in the world, to how much power conglomerates have, to who is destroying the environment, to what type of 'under-cover' roles our governments are playing in support of these conglomerates and against sometimes democratically elected leaders. (History is rife with them: Mossadegh, Arbenz... ).
There will never be a trial for the leaders for their part 'in the destruction of the earth' because victors decide who committed crimes, powers that be decide what rules to follow what rules to change, what treaties to sign, what treaties to ignore, how much must greed be satisfied..
Only history will judge, and I am afraid that our children and grandchildren will only look upon us with disdain, us the people who allowed all this destruction to happen.
And they would be right to look down upon us.

I don't know man...but if we kill him...if WE kill him...not only will there be more sectarian violence...but there will be more violence against US soldiers in Iraq and hatred toward america worldwide in general. Not only for the act itself but for its hypocracy of supporting him at first and then killing him. It could cause terrorist attacks in the future and only exacerbate our current situation. It has nothing to do with oil though by the way, that's ridiculous.
However, it doesn't look if we pardon him outright...so in the name of "fairness" I think we should have a more balanced worldwide trial of saddam hussein...so other powers also share some of the judgement in the decision...at least have the an iraqui based decision, even if it is more barbaric than something we would do.
actually---it is a mostly iraqui based decision...I looked at the stats again. Its US based...but its Iraqui decision...so we will escape some of the rage...but there will still be a shitload of sectarian violence...whatever.

Geez, Dave, You're a deep thinker aren't you? And really informed in a vacuous , biased, super shallow sort of a way. Does it occur to you that we owe the Shia and Kurdish populations of Iraq for encouraging them to overthrow Saddam back during Desert Storm 1 which caused Saddam to eradicate them? oh wait, they deserved it, because it's all just about oil. It isn't about genocide at all. It never is!
But it's just about oil , isn't it, our government's interest in the Middle East? Iran isn't really a threat is it? Hezbollah is just like the boy scouts, right? The missiles they send into Israel don't hurt real people, right? They are home made rockets. They just dream about the stars. They don't hate Jews. And their relation to Iran is just like local scouts to the national, eh?
And, uh, hey, where is Iraq, anyway? Or Afghanistan? Hum, on either side of Iran. That's just meaningless BS. Doesn't mean a thing in world politics does it?
Gee, maybe the US and other civilized western countries should just make a policy that when a mass murder is convicted, we won't imprison or punish him, because Dave W says he's a martyr. We can establish a lottery and pick them to be lifetime ruler of some screwed up African country, huh?
I'd hate to make a mass murder, especially one
so prolific as to score on an international scale, into a martyr for all time to come! "Cuz, come on, it just about oil!
Oh, and for the record, I believe everything idiots tell me, too, Dave

It's a hard 1!! If he hangs then he most definately becomes a martyr but if hes left to rot in jail hes capable of spouting more crap and is still seen as a great leader.

I don't think he's got a great lot of support; the people dancing in Baghdad yesterday don't seem to view Saddam as a hero. So no, he probably won't be regarded as a Martyr.

Yes, if he is executed he will become a martyr. But dont knock Bush too much for trying to secure a supply of oil. Imagine your life without it. We`d be cold and starving very quickly.
