If I had a free weekday in San Francisco what should I do? I'm considering hitting wine country or maybe heading over to Berkeley. Any suggestions?

I'd do napa. Start off with a couple wineries in the AM, get lunch someplace, and then hit a few more wineries before heading back. Make sure to pack water or buy some while you are there.

Wineries I'd consider going to:

Schramsberg (appt only)
Raymond
Beringer (only for the tour)
Twomey
Silver Oak
Caymus (appt only)
Cosetino
Domaine Carneros
Beaulieu Vineyards (BV)

Places I'd avoid:

Mondavi
Rubicon/Coppola
Andretti
Clos Pegase
V Sattui
Peju

Consider Sterling - the wine isn't great, but if it's a nice day, the tram ride is beautiful.

Last November 2005, I was in San Francisco, I went to the wine county, in Sonoma & Napa. I also went to Berkeley.
You can go free wine tasting & touring the grape vineyards & try Californian food in the nearby area.
In Berkeley, my friend treated me to a lunch in a restaurant having Bayview as its background. There is a pathway there where in you can walk after lunch. The place is so romantic with nice ambiance.
You can also try riding the BART & go round trip. See the Contra Costa County! or go shopping at Daly City, parking there is more convenient.
Have you been to Monterey? It is also nice to go there! Large aquariums are a major tourist attraction. See the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Another suggestion is to see the Yosemite National Park.
There are nice places around the Bay area, the place will depend on your interests!

Wine country! I vote for Napa. It's been beautiful here, the rains haven't really hit yet, and it's crush season. Tons of stuff to do and you can really see a lot in one day-trip. The downtown has shops and dining and wine-tasting, then head upvalley for more! If you want a local's tips, email me.

Golden Gate is awesome. Pier 39. The Metreon. The crookedest street. Chinatown.

Have fun!

I would definately vote for Berkley. Its been two years since my fiancee and I have been there (we move alot) there is alot to see and a lot to see. I would recommend telegraph ave. it has shops that run on either side through berkley and oakland, try oakland if you are looking for nice cheap clothes i would reccommend you travel with a friend though if you are going around through oakland. have a great time.

Go to the Titanic Exhibit at the Metreon. One of the best I've ever seen! Unbelievable! Highly, highly recommend it.
