The thrombus could break off and become an embolus, which are very dangerous. it could become lodged somewhere, like in the brain, and cause major damage and, as you so classically put it, sudden d ;)

Arteries are vessels that carry blood away from the heart hence to the brain arms and other parts of the body. If a portion or all of the clot travels to a vital part of your body (most times the brain) it will result in sudden and unexpected d.

It's stasis is not guaranteed and could become a part of an embolus and kill you. That's just my supposition though.
