This might sound really bad, but I'm 20 years old and I'm going to the Gyno for the first time Monday. I really don't know what kind of questions to ask and I was hopinf some of the ladies in here could help me out a little bit. I feel really dumb asking this but I really just don't know what to ask or what to do. I know the nurse set up for me to have a PAP test, and I do know what that is, but I really don't know what else to expect. Can anyone shed a little light on this for me?

well I have been having problems in the last few months with my periods. I had a normal period every month then after my period on August 12-17 I didn't have another until Oct. 17th-21st. I had problems before and I didn't have insurance so I went to the HD and they just put me on BC until they didn't call my in for another appointment in April. I do have an active sex life so when my period never came in September my first thought was that I was pregnant. I took an HPT and it was neg, then I went to my regular doc and she had bloodwork done, which came back negative, then within 2 weeks my period started. I don't know my mother very well. We haven't spoken in about 8 years, but I think she had PCOS. She always had irregular periods and had an awful time losing weight and had many other symptoms. I'm afraid I may have this and I'm not sure what tests to ask for, or even how to ask about it.

Just tell the doctor of any concerns you have, and what you think your mother may have had. Ask if there is a test for it. Don't be afraid to ask questions even if you think they are dumb! I ask dumb questions all the time, and I'm a lot older than you! The doctor won't think they are strange.

Write down your questions now as you think of them. It's easy to forget. I always take a list of questions when I have my yearly physical. Also make a list of any medications you may be taking.

When you go in they will check your blood pressure and pulse just like in the normal docs office. They will ask you about your periods such as are they regular and how far apart are they, do you have any problems with discharge, are you taking any medications etc. They will then have you undress and put a gown on and sit on the exam table. The doc will then have you lay down and they will put your legs in the stirrups and do the pap smear which you said you were familiar with. The doc will then remove the speculum and insert his fingers while he presses on your abdomen with his other hand to check for anything unusual. They will then do a breast exam and that is pretty much it. There are really no questions that you need to ask unless there is something that you want information about such as birth control pills or how to do a monthly breast exam at home or whatever. If you have no questions that is fine. I am not really sure why you are seeing a GYN doc though if you didn't specifically have something you wanted to discuss with a GYN doc. Your regular doc is can do your yearly pap and pelvic exam. Good Luck.

Don't be nervous. Nothing is painful, just akward and possibly uncomfortable. Keep in mind that your decision to go for the exam is an intelligent decision and shows that you are taking care of yourself.

Well, first you could ask your gyno to warm up his/her hands first. It's really not that bad but cold hands can be a shock.
