In simple words Cohesion means attraction between same type of molecules and Adhesion means attraction between different molecules.
For example in a glass of water, the force of attraction between water molecules is cohesion and that between water molecules and glass is adhesion

Difference Between Cohesion And Adhesion

Both the words relate to Chemistry only. The exact definition as per Wikipedia is given below.

Cohesion or cohesive attraction or cohesive force in chemistry is the intermolecular attraction between like-molecules. Cohesion explains phenomena such as surface tension. Capillary action for example described in the Cohesion-tension theory related to botany is considered a mix of cohesion and adhesion. Cohesion is produced by the intermolecular forces. Mercury is an example of a liquid that has strong cohesive forces.

Adhesion is the molecular attraction exerted between bodies in contact. It is of particular interest to engineers who wish to stick objects together and to biologists to understand the workings of cells.

Cohesion: Sticks together. A cohesive group of people, for example, is a group that sticks together and remains pretty strong. In chemistry, you could say that water is cohesive, as it tries to remain in groups.

Adhesion: Sticks to other stuff. Something that's adhesive, like tape, sticks to other things.

Cohesion, by definition is "the molecular force between particles within a body or substance that acts to unite them" whereas adhesion is "the molecular force of attraction in the area of contact between unlike bodies that acts to hold them together."

The difference is simple: Cohesion is the force between particles that makes them come together. Adhesion is the force of attraction between to contacting unlike bodies.

cohesion is when water molecules(just an example) stick to other water molecules, adhesion is when water sticks to other object (i.e.- an arm, a glass, etc.) cohesion is more involved with surface tension and adhesion deals more with capilarry action
