Why? And what are some of the philosophy behind the idea?

I believe we control are own actions and nature controls reactions. e.g Jumping in the air - We choose to go up then nature chooses us to go down.

I know I do have some freewill, even as I am 'small' and yet I believe in fate because I do not know nor understand why in almost all important matters, my freewill comes a cropper - for instance in securing a desired future or in protecting my body from disease or discomfort or in having the desired quality of life even on any single day!!
Call it fate, call it destiny, call it chance, there is this extraneous force that makes sure our freewill will remain rather limited and small.

Freewill

2006-11-06 01:44:44 · answer #3 · answered by Anonymous · 0 1

Both. I believe in Fate (something that we're destined to do, someone that we're meant to be with) but at the same time we are free to make our decisions & choose our paths. Fate may give us little hints which direction is right for us but it's up to us whether we follow the signs or just settle for any old thing along the way. The beautiful thing about fate is that when you follow it, when you take steps toward your dreams, things start falling into place so beautifully. Once you make a positive move toward your destiny, everything becomes easier. When you fight your destiny & do things that don't feel right, you feel like crap & everything goes wrong.

freewill. isn't is philosophy that says that we are the centers of our own universe? if so, every decision, even the small ones, we make effects us. what we may think of as fate, may really be the result of a decision we made a month or a year ago.

I believe in both. Fate is what is already made out for you, freewill is how long it takes you to get there.

well....both might be figments of our imagination

it might be that our life, the choices we perceive, much less the choices we make, are no less than 70% genetically predispositioned...
or at least , that is the stat that the human genome project has published....

so....what we perceive as fate or freewill might only be our limited understanding of the pervasive influence of our genetics

does that make it "fate"????

does it matter except as an excuse for poor judgment?
it is easier to blame the "stars" than our own choices....
so...either way...fate and/or freewill....genetic predisposition or not....what difference should it make in living a good life????

Determinism, because there is no evidence that free will exists. And only ample evidence to the contrary. Of course the universe isn't newtonian, so the future isn't set in stone-- but randomness in physics does not entail free-will. It ONLY demonstrates randomness in the neuro-physical structures that generate your perception. AND THAT'S THE WHOLE ARGUMENT FOR FREE WILL.

"Free will is possible because the future is possible!"

No.

It's inconceiveable that there exists an uninfluenced locus of control in the mind beyond the reach of physics.

Free will is a fanciful vestige of medival thinking. It's also a convenient defense for justice and law. And most people find it inuitive-- because they've been brow-beaten to believe it, while disregarding science.

I think, that by way of having freewill, you create your own fate.
As each decision you make will effect the next.
Your future IS in your own hands !
Put more plainly, the domino effect.
