whats the latest year i can swap? I have a 3.1 and want to replace with the same but newer - with least conversions

No problem. 3.1 is a 3.1, no matter what year. You may want to replace your timing belt while the replacement engine is out, much easier.

I would guess the latest year around 96.but the brackets on engine will still have to be swapped over from 88 engine.

the 3.1 was used till about '96 before it got officially changed to the 3100. however some cars got the 3100 as early as '94. as long as its a 3.1l MFI (not the 3100 SFI) it should drop right in after the mounts are changed.
