If you want to use fertilizer stakes that's fine--just use the ones for evergreens or acid-loving plants. Just about all stakes last 6-7 weeks so you can fert. the 1st time when you see buds breaking in the spring and then every 6-7 weeks all summer (if you want). Stop fertilizing them in September. You want them to slow down going into winter.

depending on where you live, you should fertilize them about every 3-6 months. because they are not deciduous(don't looses their leaves in winter)they actually grow all year long.and also depending on your soil,i would say use an acidic fertilizer such as "muracid" made by miracle grow.

In the spring. If it blooms like an azalea or camillia, fertilize after the blooms die. If just a shrub, in the spring.
