Please end this on-going argument between me and my fiancee. Who has sold more and is the bigger influence in modern times? Has J.K. Rowling sold more books or The Beatles more records? I say The Beatles were a bigger influence on generations of people since their inception whilst my missus seems to think that despite Harry Potter books being released within the last 10 years, they have had a bigger impact world wide than The Beatles. What do you think?

Whilst the Harry Potter series is a fantastic read and has 4 relatively good movies, I don't see how this fad could influence generations of people and young kids for 40 plus years. Does it spread the message of love and world peace? Sure it makes kids read again, a tough task at the best of times and worthy of note and just under a billion pounds but influencing several generations of people, musicians and the world? No, certainly not. For The Beatles it wasn't about the money, it was the message, and that message went world wide and has stayed there. I bet The Beatles sold more records than Potter books and though they are both worth millions, The Beatles will be remembered forever.

I 100% think that your fiancee is correct. Of course J.K Rowling is more influential, despite having only been prominent for the last 10 years or so. It goes without saying that The Beatles were mildly entertaining / influential at best. J.K Rowling is a genius, and by the way so ius your fiancee for being right.

What a completely stupid question, how insulting to J.K Rowling to compare her with " The Beatles", as if they have contributed anything of value to society. They were just a bunch of semi-talented muso's whose songs all sounded the same and had lame lyrics. J.K Rowling on the other hand is of exceptional talent, had created a fabulous series that rivals the works of C.S Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien and is a gift which has been embraced throughout the whole world. There is a reason she is the richest woman in Britain, it is because she is the biggest selling author of all time. I actually believe that the woman should be made a Dame due to the wonderful gift she has given us all. P.s Hello Crede x

I think that each has had an influence in their own time. Harry Potter is such a young fandom comparitively to the Beatles. In the years to come perhaps Harry Potter will stick around

but for now.. I think the Beatles are winning.

THE BEATLES.

The Beatles have been an influential force for 40+ years and have influenced almost every musician since. Their lyrics spoke for a generation -- don't see how J.K. Rowling has spoken for a generation.
