the point of the movie is that the storm that you saw in the movie was the perfect storm that they went through. the tides the wind the precision of the rain, was a perfect storm. not alot of ppl get to see a perfect storm in the sea because we are all surrounded by large buildings and that changes the way a storm is in our view. the perfection of the storm itself is that it is a perfect triangle of storms that come together to escalate into one big storm. the fishermen got caught in this because they wanted to reap the benefits of a great catch. in some way this relates to the greed of being human and even though we know **** is gonna hit the fan, we always want the 'biggest/best' of what this life has to offer. we may 'see' the storm coming but by trying to get the most we end up 'killing ourselves'.

i haven't read the book but the story is about a group of northeastern U.S. fishermen *ie. fishermen who do it for a living, as a job* who go out in bad weather and get caught in a very bad storm. it's at least partially based on a real story, or a compilation of the experiences of several real professional fishermen.
