Climate change.
The Great Wall of China.

There were many reasons. The person who said the Great wall wasn't being facetious, the Great Wall prevented Mongolians from conquering China and set them moving westward, they pushed the huns off the steps and further west. The Huns, especially Atilla the scourge of God, pushed Goths Visigoths, Vandals and many other Germanic Tribes west. The Eastern half of the Roman Empire paid Atilla off and didn't "fall" for another thousand years. The Western half of the Roman Empire had already ceased to the economic focus of the classical world, partly due to climate change. So, in effect, the "barbarians" were moving into an already moribund territory. I also believe that the Catholic church had a role to play in the destruction of Western Roman Empire. The Empire in pagan times was very tolerant (relatively) of other cultures, and was willing to adopt aspects of the cultures Rome was absorbing (conquering). But the Catholic church was very anti-tolerance, and wouldn't even accept other brands of Christianity. If they had, the Germanic Tribes that were Arian "Heretics" (followers of Bishop Arius's creed, not to be confused with the Aryan of the "Aryan" Nation) in the church's eyes, might have been made into allies and brought fresh blood and invigorating ideas to the old empire.

The corruption and degeneracy of emperors like Caligula and Nero had nothing to do with the Empire's collapse. In fact, they presided during the empire's early years, with the Pax Romana (the Roman Peace; a time of stability and prosperity) lasting for almost two hundred years after they died.

Hello, what a wonderful question, if you have cable, right now you can turn on the Discovery channel, and the story you are asking about is showing a realistic re-enactment of what you are asking. If you watch this you will know just about all, except for the real bitter end the dates and times and names such as Octavian(Augustus) who ruled when Jesus was crucified, and the infamous Coagulis, or Nero, you will have to research on the web-site www.history.com and there you type in Roman,History in the search box and it will take you to oodles of factual info.
